I'm not inclined to listen to Celtic music at home.  I'm more likely to go to a live show, or even hire the band to play a house concert. I'm running the Celtic series at the Old Brogue in Great Falls now... I adopted that baby from IONA this past Fall.  Hopefully I can beg your help promoting the shows?  We need all the help we can get. : - ). I'm so very green at promoting shows, and now I'm running two concert serieses... serii?  Like you, I'm all about keeping this music alive and vibrant, and building an audience for my brilliant colleagues. All the best," Metta RavenHeart messaged on Patreon about show #748: "Here here and there there.  Your authenticity far outweighs any difference of opinion. Please continue to march for freedom.  Here in New Mexico we know what it is like to stand up against tyranny and racism, and you inspire us to continue." Alexander Randall 5th emailed: “Whether you make better patter or not, I will listen to you until I die. I mentioned the Galacian Celtic music. I am so intrigued by this sound. Some of it is like obvious jigs and reels and marches, but it also sounds like Flamenco some of the time and sometimes muslim  creep in.  It is very "spanish" and yet not.   And when the bagpipes come in, you think you are in Ireland... Here are four that you will find interesting. This one is by the kind of .  It opens with an almost middle eastern sound, the the voices com in singing in Spanish and then the bagpipes hit and it turns into a celtic party... in spain!   with cricket and turns into a dance. .  It says so in the title but then it turns into something else  -   -  The Muneira is like the Galacian national dance... It could be scots... What country ? You pick up all kinds of odd ideas.  Fiddle around with this Galician celtic music…”

I had a chance to sit in on my first Irish session last weekend!!!

I didn't play as I only know one jig and I'm not able to play it very fast yet (I'm at 160BPM with the Swallowtail Jig) right now working towards 200BPM).

So I introduced myself and then sat at a closeby table and drank some beer while listening to the session. It went on for two hours and I took good notes and enjoyed myself quite thoroughly.

Cool thing happened!!!

After the session was over, folks sat with me and we got to know each other. They gave me tips and encouraged me to keep practicing.

After a bit, I pulled out my whistle and played the Swallowtail Jig, to show them where I was at. And get this!!! A fiddle player heard me start playing and pulled out his fiddle and plucked along with me!

That's the first time I've played with anyone else! It's a simple thing, but I can't express how elated I was.

They invited me to sit with them next time. Knowing full well I'm a proper beginner and learner with only a single jig under my belt. It's driven me to make sure I practice each day. I don't want to let them down and it's a wonderful thing to look forward to each month.

Spring is a good time to think about what we plant — literally and figuratively. The Celtic lands we love were shaped by people who understood that the earth gives back what you put into it. This week's tip is simple. Go native. If you're planting anything this spring — flowers, shrubs, anything — choose native plants. They support local pollinators, use less water, and need far less maintenance. One trip to a native plant nursery can do more good than you'd expect. Walk outside. Pick up one piece of trash. Plant something that belongs. The same spirit that carries Celtic music forward, community, resilience, love of the land, is the same spirit that keeps this planet alive. Let's carry that forward. Tim Cannon emailed: "Marc, Thanks for doing what you do, and for doing for so long! Please bear with me...  I'm old enough to remember the days when stereo's would hold multiple CD's and there was a setting to shuffle between the CD's.  Do you know of an App that does something like this?  I imagine that I would store my albums on my device and in the app choose which ones are available for the shuffle.  I use pandora and spotify, but would prefer something that better supports the artists." Jeffrey Alexander messaged on Facebook: "Is the iPhone app dead?? If so what is the best way to listen now?" I replied: Patreon app. I don't know if you're a subscriber, but it works great for this app. And gets you involved with the community. It works well even if you just follow the show there. Overcast. Tho I've been listening to a lot more shows on Patreon. This is my favorite Podcatcher. It's iPhone only. Has cool features if you're not listening to music apps. Apple Podcasts. Still a good podcatcher. Daniel Faigin replied to the comments in #748: "I just wanted to applaud what you said to the fellow who made the "libtard" comment in Ep 748. Folk music and celtic music has always spoken truth to power, and our current leadership needs to hear the truth. This listener supports what you said. You might lose some listeners, but hopefully you will gain a lot more from the folkies and celtic music fans that agree with you. If there had been a one - time donation button on the site or the patreon, I would have used it. Instead, I'll just continue to support the great artists you find." He followed up with this short email: "When I shared what you said with my wife, she said: "You've been listening long enough". So I signed up at the lowest level  -  -  less for the perks, and more to support your effort." Thank you Daniel. Yes. I definitely lost followers for my political shows these past couple months. And you are right, there is outrage from the continued injustices by the current administration. So much so that the NO KINGS protests continue to peacefully grow. There are three ways that we can make true change, especially with a government that is complicit in supporting the illegal actions of our president. Vote them out. Make your voice heard in November. Support small, local indie businesses. It's always good to support your local community. But most of these businesses not only need your support more than some giant corporation, but they also aren't supporting a government actively breaking laws and hurting people. Speak up. Publicly. At rallies and protests. Online. And especially by contacting your representatives. It feels futile. But it's not. Your voice matters. You also mentioned making a one - time donation. I don't have a regular way of sharing the URL, but if you go to , then you make a one - off donation. But your regular support on Patreon means everything. So thank you!

Moya Brennan at Cork Opera House

The news broke this morning that Moya Brennan passed away yesterday, and this photo has been on my mind ever since I heard. I took it at Cork Opera House on the 2nd of March 2020, during Clannad's Farewell Tour. What a strange, loaded date that turned out to be. Barely a fortnight later the country shut down, venues went dark, and the idea of standing shoulder-to-shoulder in a theatre listening to a voice like hers felt like something from another era. They put on a fabulous performance that […]

Ah, this is some sad news. I’ve been a fan of Clannad for a long time. 😔

“There is heartbreak tonight following the passing of revered singer and harpist Moya Brennan at the age of 73 after a short illness.

Known as the first lady of Celtic music, Moya was the timeless and ethereal voice at the heart of the Grammy award-winning Donegal supergroup Clannad.”
