Activist Digital Security Practices

This Knowledge Roundup about digital security practices for activists is from the Global Grassroots Support Network (GGSN).

@tutormentor1 Nice to hear from you and great project with obvious social impacts! Love the process map. I used something similar to map out our strategy when securing funding. Looks like systems thinkers think alike :)

How it started: Spring of 22, Kenzie Harris and I (supported by a forward-looking global funder) start building a community of practice linking folks around the world who support grassroots 'justice-oriented' activists.

How it's going: https://medium.com/@TomLiacas/supporting-grassroots-justice-oriented-activists-around-the-world-a-years-worth-of-learnings-e685407eb4ba

Organizing against the far right: Activists from the Global Grassroots Support Network recently pooled some resources on promising approaches from around the world.

Now published as a 'knowledge roundup' doc on Blueprints for Change. More suggestions welcome! https://blueprintsfc.org/guide/organizing-against-far-right/

Activist digital security practices - knowledge roundup

In this roundup, we accessed knowledge from several organizers involved in grassroots activist support across the world in response to the question: What does online security look like for your group? What platforms do you use for that?

Blueprints for Change

There is growing interest in activist circles for guidelines and practices that could make physical and virtual spaces more accessible, to ensure that everyone is welcome and encouraged to join movements in whatever way they can.

This guide makes use of existing organizer databases as well as knowledge contributed in learning circles by Canada's Climate Justice Organizing HUB. It includes definitions of accessibility, considerations for accessible event and action planning, communication and content, creating an accessible culture and other suggestions related to creating a space that is inviting to all.

I often get asked a version of this question by funders: “Sure, we’ve all seen these strikes and big marches, but is there any proof climate activism actually works?”

In this post I put out on Medium, I'm flipping that question to ask funders how their own strategies and established programs are working to face the climate crisis in Canada, though this surely applies across other geographies. And yes, and I answer the original question too 🙂

With scarce good news on climate action these days, we could all use the inspiration provided by friend Louis Ramirez' telling of how Québec activists stopped fracking, the Energy East pipeline and the Saguenay LNG terminal. https://breachmedia.ca/how-quebec-won-the-worlds-first-ban-on-oil-and-gas-extraction #activism #fossilfuels #directaction

The story of the social movement that won a massive climate victory has never been fully told (until now)

Loved hearing Jacqueline Lee-Tam and Sara Adams bring the Climate Justice Organizing HUB's (http://lehub.ca) vision and practice of movement support to life in this 28 min. podcast. What a ways we've come in just under 3 years! ♥️ https://soundcloud.com/scott-neigh-talking-radical/infrastructure-and-support-for-climate-justice-organizing-across-canada

Our Global Grassroots Support Network project just put out our first resource in Spanish for those helping justice-oriented activist groups. It helps groups deal with high turnover, which is esp. common in youth-led and student groups. https://blueprintsfc.org/guide/la-renovacion-de-membresia-en-grupos-activistas/ #climatejustice #activism #socialjustice

If at any time you feel helpless or despairing, remind yourself that the fight for democracy, social justice and a sustainable planet is noble. The stakes could not be higher. We can (and must) win.

It’s hard to believe, but things are getting better. They will continue to if we keep up the fight

Setbacks notwithstanding, we are better today than we were 50 years ago, 20 years ago, even a year ago
