@pokeythepenguin Wow! To think that in 2003 The Pokey Principle was declaring "Despite its quick rise and many imitations, by the year 2000 it seemed that Pokey the Penguin’s time had come and gone."
not gone at all! not by a long shot
kid wants to go to a bakery event called "crumb swap". I do not think of myself as particularly porn-brained but this name seems chosen to suggest something you aren't supposed to say in public
it is kind of a bummer to me whenever I see someone post a pic of their cat being silly with the caption "apex predator". If your neighborhood has coyotes you will get plenty of evidence that housecats are not at all apex. Don't like being reminded. Posting here where ~noone follows cos this post itself is kind of a bummer
@futurebird I checked 'narcoterror' in google ngram. The term appears in 1980 and reaches a peak in 1990 before falling off until 2010. These 80s references generally refer to assassinations and mass murder of civilians by drug smuggling organizations, especially in Columbia. E.g. the US "Anti-Drug Abuse Act" of 1988 earmarks $5M for protection for judges, officials, & press in Columbia. However, even then there are arguments the term is a political distortion that obscures reality.
@mscibing I think reports of the Brinell hardness of ice (>17 below -50C) are being compared to the Mohs hardness of diamond (10) instead of the Brinell hardness of diamond (est ~8000 but the Brinell test indenters are softer so idk if an actual measurement is possible)
@futurebird @Extra_Special_Carbon The biology stack exchange has an Q/A pair "why do some bad traits evolve and some good traits do not evolve" and every question about a counterintuitive evolutionary result gets at least the attempt to shut it down with a link. There is usually an interesting answer to be had about the specific non-obvious selective forces at work, but anything that can be shut down should be is the prevailing attitude.
I think that, when he dies, Trump should be mellified
@Fundamentallylazy For entertainment, I don't ever get that far north. It looks like the space center is still open despite the gov. shutdown. If you are into space at all, it is very cool. More than an hour drive each way, though.
@Fundamentallylazy Uh, Mel's is a good burger place outside of Spring, so relatively close and is the kind of place coworkers like to go. But it's not exactly exotic and I can't guarantee it's still open
@Fundamentallylazy Agh! yeah the food in general is very good in Houston and the Vietnamese is good in the area ( I don't live in Houston). But there's huge areas that just aren't tied in to any non-car transit system
