Historian at Leibniz-Archiv Hannover. Edition of letters to and from G. W. Leibniz. He/him.
Forgive me for briefly interrupting the doom and gloom on your timeline. Here is my parents' cat in full Hallmark holiday card mode.

"Oh my G*d, I think it's Larry!"
"... They cut him in wafers and ... hung him out to dry? What kind of monsters would do that?"
"We have to get the **** out of here, Tina, before it's too late!"

*narrator voice* It was already too late. Far too late.

Four years in Hannover and doing mostly fine here - but there are still moments when things feel entirely alien. Here is the local paper claiming that the Schützenaufmarsch (10000 potatoes in imaginary uniforms) is "a panorama of our entire society". That is clearly a society that I am not part of, or would want to be, or could be if I did want. And I'm 100% certain I cannot be the only person living here who isn't... this.
The German fascination with sausages clearly is not a recent development. The journeymen butchers of Nuremberg in 1658 paraded a 500-pound bratwurst through the streets. (Extract from W. E. Tentzel, Monatliche Unterredungen, March 1697, p. 252, reviewing J. C. Wagenseil, De S.R.I. Libera Civitate Noribergensi Commentatio, Altdorf 1697.)
