It wasn't just a payoff to stop something sleazy from becoming public.
The reason they were so keen to keep it secret was to win a presidential election.
That is the issue: This was gross interference with a presidential election -- and it worked.

Holding a politician accountable for crimes he commits to gain power is good. Letting him get away with crimes to keep him from inciting violence is bad.
Let’s dispense with the absurdly dangerous objections to indicting Trump for his crimes. We simply cannot allow a politician to use threats of political violence to put himself above the law. It’s an unthinkable precedent.
