@will I'm all about protecting the ground crew, but given the minimal risk, the shut downs seem extreme? More folks die driving to/from the airport than from lightning...

@will I've been in one and it was a nothing burger. Airports are shut down to protect the baggage handlers and ground crew, not the airplanes: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-happens-when-lightni/
