I am fairly sure no one in my network here on Mastodon is an AACTA member and so can't vote, but regardless, a documentary I was Associate Producer on has been nominated for an award! This is the companion piece to immersive docudrama Sorella's Story, which premiered at Venice Immersive last year.
To Never Forget is a feature doc that tells the story of a massacre that happened in Latvia during the Holocaust and the ripple effects on descendents 80 years later here in Australia.
This really was a historic moment. The Matildas have totally changed the face of womens sport in this country and catapulted it firmly into the mainstream. And given that this is Aus, one of the most sport obsessed countries in the world, I honestly believe this is going to dramatically impact the future of feminism here. Boys looking at badass women and saying 'I want to be like her' and girls knowing exactly the kind of recognition that their work, determination and skill deserves.
Such a big, amazing energy in Australia right now because of the world cup. Queer woman of colour Sam Kerr is currently the most loved person in the entire country, hands down. A sporting hero that little girls and boys alike all want to dress up as for Halloween. Kids (and adults!) everywhere signing up to play soccer because they want to be like the Matildas. The Aus/Eng semi-final game was the most watched program in Australian history. These women have done something incredible for Australia
I teach screenwriting and every single class this week I've had students asking me my thoughts on the writers strike. Every time it's the same answer: I'll happily see every show I love die a terrible death if it means writers get paid fairly for the work they do.
I'm pretty sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but if you're upset at the idea of film and television programming being disrupted, then you need to acknowledge that the work writers do brings real value to your life. Support #WGA
The pride and joy of my little balcony garden🦴🌱 Sydney the Skeleton has been a member of this household across 3 houses now. Finally they've found a way to pull their weight by holding up the disco ball planter my friend got me✨
I think we can all agree that the problem with the Torment Nexus was that it was centralized, which is why we're introducing the Torment Blockchain.
FINALLY! Finally I feel like my analysis and findings have crystallized. I said to my housemate a couple weeks ago "I've managed to take like 6000 words to feel like I've said absolutely nothing." It took going in and completely recoding my interviews, but I see it now, and bless my wonderful supervisors, they just told me it's looking great. I am SO CLOSE to submitting this MPhil thesis and can't wait to actually get some of this published hopefully soon.
Of course I knew I was never guaranteed acceptance and I don't take rejection (and a waitlist in this case) too personally. It's just frustrating knowing I was priced out of most of my options. I didn't meet the criteria for most fee wavers despite my financial need. It's one thing to succeed or fail on my own merits. It's another thing to just miss out completely for being poor. It doesn't seem like a particularly kind system. After currency conversion I ended up paying $200 for a single app 🙃
I'm really regretting not applying to more PhD programs but unfortunately my housemates and I spent the application period getting evicted from our house in the middle of a major housing crisis. So all my time and money instantly disappeared into trying not to be homeless. I prioritized 2 unis with excellent fit and skipped some meals to pay exorbitant app fees and then I simply couldn't afford to do more. Feeling the consequences of that now as I'm totally screwed for this cycle.
