It turns out, Arlo Guthrie has a website (Arlo.net) that he still updates himself. It still has a functioning daily view counter.

This week is the 50th anniversary of “Alice’s Restaurant.”

I think we can drive that view counter up a bit.

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but please post/reshare.

Many of you know I’ve been making a music podcast for five years.

Our last episode each year, where we pick the best songs of the year, is always my favorite.

The 2023 edition just dropped and I’d love it if you gave it a listen:

No Repeat: 260: Song of 2023

The tradition continues...These are our favorite songs of 2023. Shaun swears they're all folk songs, but Taylor & Tyler disagree. This Week's Picks The Playlist B-Sides Support the Show Submit a Challenge Email us: norepeatpod[at]gmail[dot]com Follow Us

Researching for our upcoming Artists to Watch episode of No Repeat and stumbled upon this absolute barn burner from a band called #SPRINTS that I can’t believe I hadn’t heard yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLTI6gDyxGs
SPRINTS - LITERARY MIND (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

YouTube

The #Sphere truly must be seen in-person to be believed. It is absolutely mind blowing.

#U2 are in top form, Adam Clayton in particular shines thanks to the powerful sound system in this space.

The use the term "artificial intelligence" for stuff like chatGPT and LLMs is like how people use the name "hoverboards" for things that ride on the ground and do not in fact hover.

Also excited for the ability to turn off listening history during certain focus modes.

I don't want the ambient music I use to sleep showing up in my new music and favorites mixes.

Beyond excited that Apple Music finally gets a "favorited songs" playlist in #ios172

This should have been a feature the whole time. And now all of my favoriting is finally worth something.

This #TuneTuesday I want to shout out my good friend Tess, whose new album "Runaway" is out today!

If you like #greenday, #paramore or old school #falloutboy this album is gonna knock your socks off.

@upgrade also, just as a fun aside:

I recently got a tattoo that the upgradians will appreciate to celebrate completing my thesis/masters program.

@imyke, @jsnell

Thanks @upgrade for once again shouting out my thesis on the meaning of “Pro” in Apple’s product marketing (free download here: https://scholarworks.gsu.edu/fmt_theses/7/)

I think Myke’s power ranking of “Pro-ness” in this week’s episode was spot on. Desktop Macs still seem to be angled at literal professionals, but the more portable/higher volume products lean towards “Pro” as a status symbol. At a certain point I start to wonder if “Pro” becomes a signifier of economic class.

The Macintosh Professionals: Crises in Industrial Lore and Fan Reception of Apple's Desktop Computers

This thesis uses industrial discourse analysis and fan studies to posit that fandom has the power to intervene in moments when producers and brands thwart expectations generated by industrial lore. Steve Jobs’ “Four Quadrants” strategy became a crucial piece of Apple’s industrial lore is shown to influence the expectations of Apple fans. Negative fan reactions to new product launches will be used to demonstrate the impact of said lore and the openings it creates for dissent. Analysis of the industrial discourse surrounding the discontinued iMac Pro and redesigned Mac Pro determines the efficacy of fan interventions in eliciting a concession from Apple.
