Instead of the traditional view of calling as narrow, immediate, and long-term... Perhaps we should rethink the "shape" of our calling?

You can access our paper for FREE on open access in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology here:

There's a growing understanding that calling can have negative effects, esp when people perceive a strong calling but find themselves in jobs where they can't "live out" their calling (e.g., tough industries such as entertainment).

This is what inspired our paper (w/ co-authors John Aitken and Lauren Kuykendall). We theorized a new way of thinking about calling as dynamic in “shape” across 3 facets: scope (broad v. narrow), time proximity (immediate v. distal), & duration (short- v. long-term).

Ok... What in the world are all of these shapes?!

New Publication !! 📢📢

This is from our new publication - my favorite so far! - proposing that we rethink our understanding of "calling" or "vocation."

I remember being continually encouraged to identify and pursue my calling as I was approaching college graduation. There was this implicit idea that if I could just figure out what my calling was and pursue it, I'd be (overall) happy in my career.

But that's not always how it goes, is it? 🤔🤔

Thank you everyone who has supported me, partnered with me on projects, and otherwise been a friend and colleague! I'm especially indebted to Mason's Graduate Division and GAPSA, where I've been working the past 2 years to improve graduate education, for their support & encouragement. Now to make sure I can graduate on time 😅 If anyone's interested, I've built a website that you can subscribe to for updates on research, new opportunities to collaborate, etc.

Onward!
Steven Zhou – Leadership | Psychometrics | Education

I'll be fully remote, so I'll still finish my PhD in #IOpsychology at George Mason University, continuing my research in leadership, psychometrics, & the academic-practitioner gap. Purdue also has amazing I-O faculty & students with whom I'm excited to collaborate on research!
Exciting news! I just started a full-time academic position as the Survey & Measurement Methods Lead for Purdue University's Institutional Data Analytics office (http://purdue.edu/idata)! I'll be leading the design, execution, & analysis of large-scale surveys to fac/staff/students on topics such as well-being, student satisfaction, learning outcomes, teaching evals, burnout, and more.

It was a huge honor to share my experiences on this #SHORTTalks podcast, especially focusing on how undergrads in smaller schools (like my alma mater Pepperdine) can leverage their unique networks to become strong PhD applicants despite limited formal research opportunities.
