As the U.S. sinks into dictatorship -- malevolent rule by corrupt politicians and oligarchs -- the institution I know the best has almost completely failed to recognize, much less counter, the threat. Big Journalism will be remembered for its cowardice and capitulation. https://www.theguardian.com/world/commentisfree/2026/mar/17/trump-is-aiming-for-dictatorship-thats-the-verdict-of-the-worlds-most-credible-democracy-watchdog

Sweden’s V-Dem Institute warns that the US is no longer a liberal democracy. And autocracy is creeping across Europe too, says writer Martin Gelin

CBS is shuttering its radio division, which provides top of the hour news segments to over 700 affiliate stations. CBS News was already in a rapid tailspin, but this will be a deeply felt blow to broadcast radio in the US.

"Both (one is an Adivasi) washed utensils, cleaned floors and toilets, and dusted. They could only sit on the floor, explicitly told that chairs and tables were not meant for them—a fact the homeowner, a businesswoman, freely acknowledged to us in an urban living room in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand... The workers were not allowed to enter the kitchen; the homeowner added that if they did, the entire kitchen would be washed afterwards."

Modern Slavery in India: How Adivasi Workers Remain Trapped in Debt, Deference & Disposable Work

Paid well below the legal minimum, denied basic dignity, and bound to labour through medical debt disguised as “assistance”, the story of two domestic workers reflects the condition of thousands trapped in forms of unfreedom the law abolished nearly half a century ago. From brick kilns and farms to urban living rooms, bonded labour persists—disproportionately ensnaring Adivasi workers—normalised by social hierarchy, administrative indifference, and an economy structured around informal, disposable work.

"Irony alert: Nate Cavanaugh — a college dropout with no government experience, no background in the humanities, and no apparent understanding of the grants he was terminating — defined DEI as 'decisions on the basis of something other than merit.' He said this while sitting in a deposition about his time holding multiple senior government positions for which he had no qualifications whatsoever. The lack of self-awareness is genuinely staggering."

Let me be clear: Afroman did say some things that I would not have said. However, damned if I'm going to tell a black man whose house was wrongly invaded by gun-swinging cops the right way for him to protest their actions. He was pissed, he said some not-nice things specifically to annoy the people who harmed him, he succeeded, he was sued for it, and he won. Even if I may not be thrilled about the specific actions, I'm delighted by the outcome.

Congratulations, Afroman!

Ok. I wrote about the Afroman trial, including this incredible image of him being sworn in on the witness stand.
