Really thoughtful, really provocative. Worth reading in full. Lee Vinsel, "How to Be a Better Reactionary: Time and Knowledge in Technology Regulation"

Ever wonder why Mastodon doesn't have a quote repost feature like Twitter's quote retweet? In our
@acmcompass 2023 paper we found that replies *reframed* the conversation of a post compared to quote retweets. But retweets from *politically opposed* accounts twisted the OPs' words.

Work led by Himanshu Zade and Spencer Williams, with support from Theresa Tran, Christina Smith, (me), Gary Hsieh, and Kate Starbird.

I'll be at #CSCW2023 and can't wait to meet old and new friends! Let's talk if you're interested in cross-platform visual misinformation, the (mis)uses of AI-generated imagery, or what faculty life is like at a liberal arts college. Swarthmore CS is also hiring multiple visiting faculty.
First day teaching Social Computing at Swarthmore College! We did a speculative design exercise โ€” imagining what social technologies will be like in 10 yrs. Students also grappled w/ how we can better design the systems that we inhabit, why we have a responsibility to do so, & why it's so difficult.
We'll research how to resist misinformation & other types of technologically-mediated harm, build sociotechnical systems to repair trust in each other & our institutions, and empower people to advocate for their rights while refusing harmful data & labor practices โœŠ

I had a wonderful year as a postdoc at UW working with Kate Starbird & so many amazing students. Now, I'm excited to start as an assistant professor of computer science at Swarthmore College where I'll direct the Collective Resilience Lab.

Here's a few photos from my first week!

We've found ones from Michael Bernstein, Amy Zhang, Eshwar Chandrasekharan, Eric Gilbert, Juho Kim, Casey Fiesler, Amy Zhang, and Steven Dow. We'd especially welcome syllabi from outside the U.S./North America.

Catherine Grevet Delcourt and I are compiling a list of recently-taught social computing* course syllabi. If you teach one or know someone who does, reply or DM me with a link to the syllabus! ๐Ÿ™

* Social computing ~= CSCW, not purely computational social science.
