Fighting the good fight for #climatechange and an equitable future.

today i found out that a friend's elderly mother, who had managed to avoid covid while living in her own home, passed away recently from RSV contracted after she moved into an assisted living facility.

this makes me unspeakably angry. masks work for a multitude of airborne diseases. USE THEM - especially around the vulnerable!

I worked in the Marin County public school system for 15 years and this is not just a #COVID19 phenomenon. The drinking and drug use by teens has been out of control for over a decade if not longer. Rape is all to common. And the pressure and constant focus on grades by parents and teachers is out of control. The students trying to get into top colleges have placed unsustainable pressure on themselves. It has to stop. https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2023/02/13/teen-girls-violence-trauma-pandemic-cdc/
Teen girls ‘engulfed’ in violence and trauma, CDC finds

Almost 15 percent of teen girls said they were forced to have sex, a 27 percent increase over two years. Thirteen percent attempted suicide, compared with 7 percent of boys.

Gov. Ron DeSantis says the loud part out loud. We have to work hard in 2024 to make sure this racist fascist nightmare doesn't hold any office. I wouldn't visit Florida for any reason. They've lost their minds. #racism #fascism https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/13/opinions/desantis-bans-dei-florida-colleges-muhammad-licht/index.html

I sat down this week to write about the K-12 teacher shortage in the US. Halfway through, I realized calling it a shortage absolves policymakers of their role in creating poor working conditions in classrooms and driving people out of the profession.

The way we treat practitioners is fundamentally at odds with the values we collectively espouse and a ton of folks are seeing that and looking for the exits.

The Canaries are Dead and No One Wants to Go into the Mine

Yet another colleague from back home reached out to let me know they're listing me as a reference this week. We're losing great teachers at a distressing rate.

Today, you will probably see ads for Bud Light, Doritos, and Jesus. The latter will be funded by a shadowy group of theocratic billionaires like the guy who founded Hobby Lobby and sued to prevent his workers from accessing basic healthcare

CA Senator Lena Gonzalez is right. "Last year we just spent over $54 billion on climate action (in the state budget),” Gonzalez told me, “and yet we’re still investing over $11 billion of our pension funds in fossil fuel companies. It makes no sense. It just makes us look like hypocrites.” #LenaGonzalez #ClimateChange #california https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/joegarofoli/article/garofoli-climate-pensions-17774661.php
Will California take this major step to fight climate change?

Some Democrats say the state’s massive pension funds should divest from fossil fuel companies.

Environmental law charity ClientEarth, which filed the lawsuit, says it is the first case in the world that looks to hold corporate directors personally responsible for failing to prepare for the energy transition.

Failure to plan and reduce emissions should make ALL companies and boards criminally liable.

I have finally completely given up on twitter. I cannot support Elon Musk for so many reasons, but his taking away Ukraine's ability to use starlink to fight Russia finished it off. So many people say they would never buy a tesla, but are perfectly happy to tweet away. I'm an advocate for #electricvehicles, but I can no longer support Tesla. He has destroyed a car company that was doing so much good by cutting down on emissions and #airpollution He's a fascist. Who wants to buy that car?
