During this past heatwave, I was in a city, parts of which looked like this. The simple act of planting trees on the sidewalk can make a huge difference not only for pedestrians, but also for residents of these buildings, as the shade drops home temperatures at least several degrees.

In the fall, these trees would lose their leaves, allowing sunlight into the apartments, which would help with heating.
