I saw this from a fellow Fediversian - it seems smaller instances get better federated if people boost their toots across the #Fediverse?

If so, I'd be grateful if you #boost this toot and help my mini-instance reach farther.

And here's a #cat #loaf for your enjoyment!

Wow, the cat loaf that went around the world
That is an excellent catloaf.

@muiiio more like a croissant, not a loaf

hi from a solo instance ;)

@muiiio as I understand the feeds:
"Home" is everyone you follow.
"Local" is everyone on your instance.
"Federated" is every instance followed at all by anyone on your instance.

So following people adds instances to your federated timeline, and being followed by people adds your instances to more federated timelines.

@dogwelder I'm following now people who've surfaced with this toot 😊
@muiiio Always happy to boost cat posts 🥰
@muiiio
I saved this flowchart a while back and have found it very useful.
@EllenJS Thanks! So it's the last 2 things that are an issue - my instance is just 3 people, so there chance of one us interacting with a larger portion of the Fediverse is very small, compared to an instance with a thousand people ☺️

@muiiio

A way to see posts that don’t make it to your server is to open a window to another server, say @xxxxx@yyyyy, and look at its Local and Federated feeds.

Local : “These are the most recent public posts from people whose accounts are hosted by xxxxx.yyyyy.”

Federated: “These are the most recent public posts from people on this and other servers of the decentralized network that this server knows about.”

You can follow any of them that interest you.

@EllenJS Good to know! Thanks 😊

@muiiio
For even more ideas on how to find people to follow look here.

Finding people to follow on Mastodon | Masto.host

Due to the decentralised nature of Mastodon, finding people to follow may be easier on large Mastodon servers but on smaller ones may require some looking around outside your server.

@muiiio @EllenJS hm, according to this, "helping the instance federate" has no direct effect (only if someone on the instance follows someone else new)

and indeed, my Federated is pretty much the same as my Home on a solo instance

@mirabilos @EllenJS I was somehow expecting that if a person from another instance interacts with me, that would expand my visibility... Still, I've decided to follow many of those who've interacted with me, so at least that helps ☺️

@EllenJS @muiiio it does but only when people interact with you shrug nōn-algorithmic timeline and all that

but now I also know for sure what ends where, thanks for that

@muiiio what does “get better federated” even mean? I mean, what’s the effects?
@mirabilos I get to see posts from more instances - and vice versa. It's not much of an issue for people on a large instance, but mine is tiny.
@muiiio hmm, I only see posts from the people I follow?
@mirabilos In your Home timeline - yes, but in your Federated timeline it's more like this: https://mstdn.plus/@EllenJS/110703459919884257

@muiiio so, given my instance hosts only me, and three bots (RSS or eMail to Fedi converters) that neither follow anyone nor boost anything, it has zero effect
@muiiio On kind.social, we also use a relay to expand our federation and thus the reach of things like our hashtag searches.
@Texan_Reverend I've added bigrelay.social and a few hashtag relays via relay.fedi.buzz but nothing else, as they seem to explode my media storage...
@muiiio In your Preferences > Admin > Server Settings > Content Retention, you'll find a setting for "Media cache retention period." I set that to 7 days, and it's help reign in remote media storage issues. You could even shorten it further, if needed.
@Texan_Reverend It's set at 1 day and it's currently over 135GB (and there's only 3 users on my instance)...
@muiiio  Well, ok then. That was all I had to recommend.
@muiiio well it appears someone on my instance already follows you so you're federated here but I boosted so at least this post federates to the instances ppl who follow me are on!
@muiiio Boosted, and what a pretty cat!
@muiiio Cat pic accepted. Here, it is dangerous to go alone, please take this boost
