Migrating a Mastodon Account

The Mastodon instance I’ve been using, mastodon.technology, is shutting down in a few months, so I’ve migrated my Mastodon account to a new server. I wanted to share the steps I went through in case the details are helpful to anyone, especially others migrating off that instance–especially a warning about when you lose access to your old account. I don’t know if these are the best steps to follow, but they worked for me.

Pretty cool that it's on the Hometown fork
(https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown/wiki), and it's got a pretty great code of conduct, written by the same guy who created Hometown, I think.

I've discovered a whole lot of great people on spore.social who post great stuff, and I'm going to continue to enjoy following them, whatever subsequent servers any of us might later be on.

I'm in the process of moving today to assemblag.es, which seems pretty great, though there are at least a few others out there that I strongly considered.

I'm disappointed that people are going to bluesky while bluesky has no content moderation policy in place, and an implied policy of allowing hate speech.

Their use of bluesky impacts my life because it builds a new social network that will be a haven for hate speech, which will spill over into the real world.

B/c it was not enough to silence her voice on the House floor, #Montana Republicans have banished Rep. #ZooeyZephyr from the state legislature for the rest of the session. She will not be permitted to represent her 11,000 constituents who elected her to speak for them. GOP lawmakers misgendered Zephyr & accused her of violating decorum by opposing their anti-trans bills & saying they would have “blood on their hands”. Protesters who supported her were arrested. This is what #fascism looks like.
