Wow. Paris just voted to triple the parking costs for SUVs.

A huge victory in the fight against car bloat.

DIRECT.

Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and better public transit, not only did it transform the city’s public life & economic success, but the traffic got better.

The traffic got BETTER.

9-foot travel lanes are often safer than 10- and 12-foot lanes, but state DOTs, local regulations and the FHWA “Green Book” design guidelines get in the way of making our streets safer

@owen No, that's not a lot. The only way I can think of is if they use net revenue and that can be positive is the cost of obtaining the fares is higher than the gross revenue of the fares. I haven't found evidence for that in the document though.
@owen Is that what you're looking for? (I know it's not the cost, but the missing revenue matches your $1.7m.)

@strongtowns Yes to every way we get safer streets. It needs something more substantial than the plastic things in the photo. Cars and trucks just drive over them and sight lines are as blocked as before. I think changing the curb or placing something heavy like cement flower pots is a much better solution. (Yes, it costs more, but at least there's an actual improvement and you don't replace plastic bollards on repeat.)
@owen I think of "make transit free" as one stepping stone to "make it frequent" because the more people use it, the less the argument "nobody is using it anyway" can be used. I know there are multiple ways to approach an increase in frequency, but if making it free even saves money, it might be the easiest one.
@benlk @mobileharv while the hyper loop might be theoretically better than self driving cars (none of which exists), it's a problem if the idea of building a hyper loop prevents the construction of proven useful and working public transit. And with the state the boring company seems in, I see it more and more as a distraction than being anything helpful.
