Experiencing my first feeling of nostalgia for the former bird site with #hurricanelee barreling towards the Maritimes. It was maybe most valuable for me as a way to follow local events as they unfold. When Fiona left us in the dark for two weeks, it was the only way to find out what was happening besides listening to a wind-up radio.

I much prefer life on Mastodon but this is one void it hasn’t been able to fill. It is the only time I have wished this site was more widely used.

I just had to update my numbers for a lecture, so here's your periodic reminder: Starlink is now 55% of ALL active satellites in orbit.

And given the recent news about that awful billionaire unilaterally deciding to cut of Starlink internet access to parts of the world whenever he wants to, this is extra important to share. Why did our governments effectively gift Low Earth Orbit to one awful dude? This is so bad.

AI systems are fueled by the stolen labour of creative people, as well as the labour of millions of underpaid data-inputting workers around the world who are performing repetitive tasks under precarious labour conditions often recruited out of impoverished populations around the world.

The international discourse surrounding the ethical development and deployment of AI systems should include labour exploitation.

Hi all! I don't know if I have any teacher friends on here (though if not maybe you know teachers!) but I'm trying to collect questions about AI (especially ethical/social implications) from kids and teenagers that I can answer. I have a feeling they will have very good questions that everyone can learn from. :) So help me out and share this with someone who might be talking to kids about this stuff? #ai #teachers https://forms.gle/61g8iSYswEZtZZGe9
Kids' questions about AI?

There's a lot of new and weird things happening with artificial intelligence! I (Dr. Casey Fiesler) want to try to explain things in ways that kids and teenagers understand, and would love to know what their questions are. This form is intended for teachers, parents, or other folks who might be talking to young people about AI, to share the questions that they have - especially about the ethical or social implications of AI or related technology! My plan is to answer these questions on social media so that everyone can learn from them - you can find all of my accounts linked at https://casey.prof/ but the primary ones are TikTok and Instagram @professorcasey. If you have any questions you are also welcome to email me at [email protected].

Hey #rock #geology gang! My niece and nephew just returned from Newfoundland with a bag full of #rocks after I turned them onto #rockhounding. Would love to teach them something cool about their finds, but I’m a noob myself. Any thoughts on what they found? I think the first could be rose quartz. Help an Auntie out!
