@pluralistic I know it's not perfect, but I'm using a Friendica instance that pulls BlueSky to it, so I can view all my Mastodon, BlueSky, RSS and more together in one feed, so I don't have to put all my eggs in one basket. I did a demo of my setup. I think you might find it interesting. youtu.be/QFGLRgnaeLc

@matrix @matthew ok, many people could *maybe* be convinced by this argument. But what is almost always lacking on this subject are the funding criteria. Most FOSS projects are just playgrounds for inexperienced developers. And even the established projects lack many of the components of a proper organizational structure, with professional UX designers, customer service, lawyers, professional managers etc. Not all FOSS projects deserve funding.

What does being a white dude have to do with being able to take a joke on not having good technical skills? You think other people are not able to take a joke? And why punch anywhere (up or down, left or right) anyway?

I’ve been reading up on OpenAI’s pivot from open to closed (and from non- to profit), in the context of ChatGPT4.
There’s a good story about this in the Verge, and a passage there struck me: one of the reasons for keeping the model (and the training dataset) closed is copyright liability - since ChatGPT is trained on “raw internet”, and the status of such training is currently contested (privacy rights could also be in play).
So we have this negative feedback loop, with copyright in the middle of it, and affecting broader issues related to ethics, responsible use, transparency.
This is really interesting, as only several months ago there was not much of a copyright angle to the debates on responsible AI.

OpenAI co-founder on company’s past approach to openly sharing research: ‘We were wrong’

OpenAI’s AI language model GPT-4 was announced this week, but the company has been criticized for not sharing more about how it was created. These complaints come at a time of increasing fears among AI experts about safety.

It's been 12 years from OwnCloud and 8 years since Nextcloud started. Any plans to make it EASY for anyone to install it? Or will it always be only for terminal users and the like?
Scientist Rebellion co-founder Dr. Tim Hewlett is facing a second trial this week, along with the Royal Society trial. He's being prosecuted for throwing paint at Shell HQ in 2022, during a worldwide protest involving over 1000 scientists. 1/2
