An intentionally destroyed #BronzeAge #sword found in a burial at Blaubeuren-Asch. Bronze Age weapons deposited in burials were often bent or hacked into pieces before placed into the grave, in this way they 'died' with the owner. Dating 9th century BC.

An #IceAge masterpiece: the oldest known representation of a bird.
The small carving (4.7cm) of a water bird was made from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago. It's thought to be a diver, cormorant, or duck.
Found in the Hohle Fels cave on the Swabian Jura.
On display at our branch museum Urgeschichtliches Museum Blaubeuren.

The Egyptians associated hedgehogs with rebirth.

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: an amazing #Roman blue glass #fish that was cast in a mould. It was presumably used as a cover of a dish for serving a fish (about the size of a trout).

Dating 1st century AD.

A fragment of a marvellous decorated double comb made of a single piece of ivory, from the Holsterburg, dating 12th century. The comb is a product of a Byzantine workshop.

On display at www.thehiddenlaend.de, on loan from LWL Archäologie, Münster

For #EpigraphyTuesday a wooden barrel found in a well in the #Roman settlement at Aalen with the name GAIVS COTTIVS FLORENTINVS branded in, probably the merchant or owner of the barrel. Barrels were used for the transport and the storage of wine. This one was reused as a lining for a base of a well. The damp environment has preserved it in a good condition.
