My dog chewed the beard off the Santa we had in the entryway to expose Santa was actually an 85-year-old woman. Plot Twist. My entire life was a lie.

(5/5) This doesn't even mention the people they employ.

The rabbit hole goes even deeper past that. OSS was never about not being able to make a living. It was about making sure the software that runs the world was accessible to everyone to look up, study, modify and build on.

(4/5) A layer deeper, @calebporzio creates one of his primary OSS packages Livewire, a package for Laravel. Caleb now has premium support for Livewire, allowing him to make a living. Livewire on top of Laravel on top of PHP on top of an endless line of other OSS and packages.
(3/5) Starting with @taylorotwell, who with the help of other OSS projects PHP, and Symfony, creates an OSS framework called Laravel. He then builds several premium products (Forge, Envoyer, Nova, Vapor) with the Laravel framework that complements the Laravel Framework.
(2/5) Also, full disclaimer, both Taylor and Caleb have a substantial amount of "partners" and "sponsors," but the argument can be made they have those partners and sponsors because of their Open Source work. So follow me on this journey.
(1/5) I feel like the Laravel ecosystem, more specifically @taylorotwell and @calebporzio, are perfect case studies on how you can make a comfortable living by building and contributing to Free and Open Source software.
I am not saying it's easy, or that there's no grind to do it
