JA→EN translator and localiser based in #Berlin
@richardmedh This one is particularly ironic because 天声人語 has a strict character limit, but translating it like this makes the English version so long
@DervPerv Welcome to my world😂 I often translate it as something like employees feeling motivated, committed or engaged

On a reddit thread where a guy is saying that 5 yen per character is the 'industry standard' for generalist JP->EN translation these days, can that really be true??

I know it's a bit of a tough topic, but can anyone give me a clue about what kind of rates are realistic in Japan nowadays?

Does anyone have any tips/resources for getting better at reading/guessing the reading of Japanese given names?

Used to be pretty good at it when I worked in an office with loads of colleagues but it's all very foggy by now..

“Berlin likes to compare itself with major cities, likes Paris, London, Milan or Vienna, but in all of these other cities the car is being systematically forced out, with higher parking fees, reduced lanes or anti-car campaigns.”

Germany's Love of Autos Puts the Brakes on Berlin's Car-Free Dreams

While Germany’s capital has made progress in building bike lanes and restricting traffic, national political shifts show that automobiles still reign supreme.

@richardmedh @DervPerv I always think of "Uptown Girl" too😅 But it all just goes to show how the word means different things from person to person, and it's a bit lazy to translate 下町 without thinking about why or in what context the word is being used

@richardmedh Funny you mention this, as I'm currently reading a mediocre translation of a Murakami book (アンダーグラウンド) and one of the people in it says something like "I'm a downtown girl, so I know that fish comes wrapped in paper."

Can imagine that's quite puzzling if you don't get the idea behind 下町..

Got really excited after finding an old Canon TX in a box, but then started reading up about mercury battery replacements and the price of 35mm film, and was much less excited. A hobby crushed before it even began.
I hope this Email doesn't find you. I hope you have escaped, that you are free.
