I've moved. I'm now at @seamus. This aus.social server is excellent and super well managed. I'm just consolidating my fedi-stuff.
I'm doing those consolidation things and will be moving to @seamus. I'll do the official migration stuff v v shortly.

Hiya!

In late September, I was voted in as President of the Science Journalists Association of Australia.

I'm taking over from the masterful, indefatigable, legendary, delightful Founding President Bianca Nogrady.

Bianca -- and all the founders and committee members over the years -- have done such an incredible job at building a community of science journalists since kicking this all off in 2019. I'm delighted she tapped me to carry the fire for SJAA through its next phase.

I have some big goals. I want to see science journalism in this country thrive by giving opportunities to young writers, creating pathways for people to make this amazing career their full-time job, helping improve the quality of an already outstanding field in this specialist beat in Oz and just building on that sense of community.

If you're a science journalist in Australia and you want to join up, you can sign up as a member at https://sjaa.org.au/

Science Journalists Association of Australia – Supporting Australian Science Journalists and Science Journalism

Sunday at PAX Australia I'm hosting a panel with four great writers who started as games journos / academics and made the leap to narrative design work. If you're at PAX and you love good games writing, come learn more!
Sunday, 8 October, 11am, Fruitbat Theatre

The results are quite remarkable: those who see Australia as united are mostly likely (58%) to vote Yes, those who see it as already divided will most likely vote No (59%). So rather than Yes being ‘the voice of division’, as the No campaign claims, it’s No that’s giving voice _to_ division.
I'm beginning to think Microsoft sign-in processes were designed specifically to upset people. It's ability to be so passive aggressive about having more than one account is unmatched.
@trib yeah, heard some non-nerdy folks in our region joined for the better internet but quit the second they felt helpless after a big hail earlier this year. Service matters - and reselling suits Starlink just fine to let someone local do that bit!
Why are some telcos reselling Starlink? I’ve heard people who have purchased direct have been quitting due to poor service. Like if a dish gets hail damage they struggle to get help. Having a local network support hardware issues could go a long way to making users far happier.

@billbennett good question. I’ve just launched it again on a device that I hadn’t used it on before and it actually showed they have a new 10 day tutorial process, with new tips each day. Seems like they have been improving that onboarding process to reveal more of what it can do in a step by step way?
