Speaking only for myself, I can think of reasons *not* to upgrade a running instance.
First, there are people using it, and they make a unpleasant, high-pitched whining sound when things change or are disrupted. Second, it takes a bunch of hours out of your life and there are much more rewarding activities. Third, because one hasn't upgraded recently, upgrading becomes incrementally more challenging.
Are you looking for some particular feature or fix in version 1.4.1?

Top-down development.
Make an outline, subdivide and ramify it, and then flesh it out, no more than one paragraph per outline item.
Then, edit it down.

I don't know how it works, but this seems recognizable from your description of watching "another person" doing the thinking:

I'm an uncredentialed "walking meditator", myself. Thoughts arise, pass, and then fall away like the landscape; and things seem more settled when I am done. Dog takes me for a walk every day, and I'm better for it.

Did the refrigerant discharge suddenly through your breach as a pressurized gas? It would have been very dramatic and loud.
The fact that you show a question mark in your illustration, and say "It seems.." makes me wonder how you could be at all unsure.
Depending on the cost of the refrigerator, it might cost more to fix it than to get a new refrigerator. The line would have to be patched and the refrigerator recharged with refrigerant (and perhaps lubricant also).
