Links to lot of paywalled articles are trending in the #fediverse recently.

I would be nice to be able either to start using some hashtags, when linking to paywalled #media, like:

#paywall or #paywalled

or maybe to have chance to store database of paywalled URLs on each instance and give users chance to display some warning or even slightly hide the paywalled links.

Obviously, no one of us will ever have accounts on ALL paywalled media, home or foreign, and I also don't really remember which huge media sites are paywalled and which not. So adding some automation and integrating database of paywalled sites into Mastodon would save me quite some time...

I am not hopeful. I am quite sad.

Elon Musk essentially bought the election when he bought Twitter.

Journalists could have left Twitter, and had it go the way of MySpace. Instead, they continued to legitimize it, thereby giving it life.

For the next four years, decentralized social media will be needed – if only as an alternative to the faux-progressive media that seek to control the public square.

The world is becoming more and more authoritarian, and we need an antidote.

You do not have to scroll social media.

You do not have to watch rolling news.

Keeping up with news is not the same as mainlining it and wallowing in it.

You can see the stats and results later. Watching constantly won’t affect the outcome.

Making friends in abandoned places is the best. I met this sweet little cat in the ghost village of Gherdeal in the Transylvania region of Romania - thankfully, even though the town was mostly deserted at the time, he(?) did have a human to look after him 🥰

If you are politically engaged it's very easy to only talk to other politically engaged people & waste a lot of energy trying to convince other informed people with complex political frameworks to change their mind.

This is the least effective way to win elections ever. If you find it fun and learn from it, great, but it's not doing anything.

I called an old HS friend and she knew NOTHING about what republicans were up to. Not the book banning, not the trans attacks. She will vote now.
