@esm iirc some early attempts at wireless controllers (we're talking NES era) did use IR but they were... awful, to say the least.
and it also took a while for bluetooth to catch on - iirc Xbox used a proprietary standard up until partway through the Xbox One's lifespan, and a lot of wireless controllers for 6th-gen consoles also used proprietary standards.
that said tbh if I were in your shoes I would inform the instructor that this facet of the material is decades out of date
