One of the pleasures in life is being known as having knowledge that might help folks and they ask... because any nerd will tell you sharing knowledge is one of their fav things to do.

Brought to you by (another) power outage & requests for backup power info: https://susankayequinn.com/2024/11/backup-power-battery-options-for-the-climate-crisis.html

Backup Power/Battery Options for the Climate Crisis

Iโ€™m a huge advocate for solar and will make a separate post for that (SOLAR: How to Get Started and Why You Should), but whether you have solar or not, having backup power is going to be moreโ€ฆ

Welp, Disney gets my ๐Ÿ–•

@susankayequinn A cautionary tale about our chemical "soup of modern existence"... on Monday an old aerosol can started leaking as shown on this chart showing a sudden increase in VOCs.

It was odorless so we wouldn't have known it was leaking if we didn't have an air quality monitor.

I recently got an Aranet4 CO2 monitor and it's a great little gadget. It's small and simple and you can easily access it using Bluetooth.

On my website I've added this dashboard showing the CO2 levels in realtime for my office. Don't forget to ping me if you see the concentration is over 1000 ppm.

It is not just outside pollution you need to worry about, cooking inside can also generate PM pollution which you can see some examples here ( https://twitter.com/jeffgilchrist/status/1741256277727068592 ). 3/

The two spikes you see in the graph are from microwave popcorn (PM 18 ug/m3) and cooking bacon inside an oven (PM 8 ug/mg) captured from the Model X in the hallway beside the kitchen. 36/

If someone tells you the last day of the year is 123123 just unfollow them, you donโ€™t need that unsortable non-ISO8601 negativity in your life.

Like weather?

This map gives you access to NOAAโ€™s forecast discussion. Just open the map, click/tap any red-outlined area and follow the link.

For an hour-by-hour forecast rightclick the location where you want the forecast. A sidebar will open. Click the hourly forecast button near the top of the sidebar.

**Tip for mobile users**
Mobile users can do a simulated right click. Tap the angle symbol at the left edge of the screen and a crosshair will appear. Drag the crosshair to where you want to rightclick and then tap the crosshair.

GISsurfer General Purpose Web Map and GIS Viewer | Surf GIS DATA

GISsurfer lets you surf a nearly endless amount of GIS data. Click a layer in the GIS server's table of contents and that data appears on the map.

The New York Times article about the consequences of Gov. DeSantis' pre-Delta pivot on COVID reminds me of this chart, made by @scottdavidherr last July and initially posted on the former bird site, which I annotated with timely statements from a DeSantis staffer:

My blog post collecting all my smoke-warning/info in one place.

Includes: why/how the smoke is dangerous to everyone, recommendations for how to stay safe, recommended air filters, whole house filters, car filters, encouragement to get your AC checked now and upgrade to a heat pump, and Additional Thoughts.

The smoke might have drifted on for the moment... but it will be back.

Now is the time to prepare.

Stay safe, friends.

Pittsburgh, Summer 2023 These are the worst fires in Canadian historyโ€ฆ and the smoke will be here (in the US, intermittently, depending on which way the wind blows) all summer. I didnโ€™tโ€ฆ
