One of the pleasures in life is being known as having knowledge that might help folks and they ask... because any nerd will tell you sharing knowledge is one of their fav things to do.

Brought to you by (another) power outage & requests for backup power info: https://susankayequinn.com/2024/11/backup-power-battery-options-for-the-climate-crisis.html

Backup Power/Battery Options for the Climate Crisis

I’m a huge advocate for solar and will make a separate post for that (SOLAR: How to Get Started and Why You Should), but whether you have solar or not, having backup power is going to be more…

@crazyeddie @ai6yr But it's an exercise device for Ben! What would he do to replace that exercise? Oh, wait, sounds like he gets quite a bit of biking exercise...

Anyway, I've used voip.ms a long time for this kind of call hunting and ring group functionality. Lots VoIP features at a very reasonable cost.

@ai6yr Theoretical example,

190-Ah 12-V battery bank, 100% full

- 28.8 Ah (30 W @ 12.5 V is 2.4 A, for 12 hours)

= 161.2 Ah, 85% full

@thomasfuchs To make it easier to switch between browsers I've been using Bitwarden for passwords.

For bookmarks I've been using Raindrop.io with a single link from the browser to https://app.raindrop.io for access to all my bookmarks.

These have made it simple to switch or simultaneously use different browsers.

@Viss @ai6yr I've been using Google Fi SIMs for a while for backup internet.

This is a mobile router I bought in 2022: GL-X750V2 (Spitz). It has worked well with Google Fi SIMs and connects to my UniFi WAN2 port.

More recently I've been using a Peplink router with both Peplink and Eiotclub eSIMs for travel. It's overkill but useful with four external 5G antennas and a USB-C power cable:

- Peplink BR1 Mini 5G (with WiFi) (MAX-BR1-MINI-5GN-T-PRM)

- Peplink 4-pin to USB-C power cable (ACW-791)

@douglasvb One possible source is the DSL line coming into the house. These are devices I've used successfully and could be used to isolate your DSL modem from the router. One of the fiber transceiver modules can be plugged directly into your UniFi router SFP+ port.

- Pair of Ethernet/fiber converters https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LDJ44XF
- Fiber LC 0.5m patch cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QFSWPKF

There would still be the 120V copper in common but this eliminates the Ethernet path.

@exador23 Not sure if it helps you decide but this is the price history for that battery on Amazon https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B0DS26NNJL
