@ksaj Yes, just plain stooopid to melt a gold coin unless it was already essentially destroyed. Ratty old silver dimes, on the other hand? about $1.15 face value per ounce, currently fetching ~$36 per ounce on the metals market; perhaps a third of that at scrap dealers.

Fun fact: a Jefferson "nickel" is 75% copper and 25% nickel.

@ksaj The coin police will tell you that modifying currency or coins for artistic or entertainment purposes is permitted; but melting down pennies (or gold or silver coins) to sell at bullion value is still verboten. The alterations you describe are considered entertainment; I mean, when's the last time a magician held up a coin shell and didn't say, "See, it's an ordinary quarter"?

here's the fed's law-speak on the topic (pour a fresh cup of coffee before reading):

@ksaj Right: you can't change the face value. There are about 150 copper pennies in a pound, melting them to sell copper ingots when the price of copper is roughly $5 a pound would be changing the value. If you own your own furnace, I guess no one would know; but a metallurgical shop would likely be skittish about bulk melting jobs. I've heard tell of a tech bro with a garage full of copper pennies just waiting to pull the trigger (see atlantagoldandcoin.com/is-it-illegal-to-melt-u-s-coins/)
@bazcook @georgetakei Given Mr. Trump's disdain for the Lincoln cent, it won't be long before he decrees it to be legal to melt copper pennies.
@IndyPedCrisis I don't know whether you're in the loop (I only learned by accident) but Bike Indianapolis and CIBA have merged to form "Central Indiana Cycling." Given Bike Indy's past performance, the new organization's "advocacy" will probably continue to be even further behind than their trail updates...
@georgetakei ob hack: cheers to OP for knowing the plural of "attorney general." That being said, they're right about the potential schadenfreude...
Weird; all those 6-3 SCOTUS decisions yesterday. Just think how different it would be if Mitch McConnell hadn't bitch-slapped two consecutive Democrat presidents.
I wanna go out and protest ICE, but I'm broke. Where do I sign up to get me some of that foreign cash money for protesters the administration keeps talking about?

I keep hearing people say that the majority of Americans voted for Donald Trump in 2024. Mr. Trump received 77,303,568 votes in the election.

Total US population (2024) = 340,110,988 -- DJT % = 22.7
Total US voting age (2024) = 268,687,681 -- DJT % = 28.8
Total votes cast (2024) = 155,201,157 -- DJT = 49.8%

Which of those numbers is the majority?

@Uair Indubitably.
