“Effective Altruism Is Pushing a Dangerous Brand of ‘AI Safety’” | WIRED

I’m just a simple country librarian, not a #TechBillionaireGod, so what do I know, but I think a truly effective form of #altruism would be to ensure that every child on this planet has proper nutrition, clean water, healthcare, housing, and free education to at least age 18.

Effective Altruism Is Pushing a Dangerous Brand of ‘AI Safety’

This philosophy—supported by tech figures like Sam Bankman-Fried—fuels the AI research agenda, creating a harmful system in the name of saving humanity

TIL you can follow hashtags in mastodon. My timeline's so much better already.
@bjornrust @timnitGebru Timnit’s piece in Wired is superb. I don’t know how much louder she can ring the alarm bell. And whether we are at all equipped to marshal an effective fight.
Some of the ChatGPT examples are downright dumb+just clear plagiarism (eg Matplotlib, tex tutorials). I have yet to see anything that is interesting. Perhaps it is all more impressive if you don’t think about the billions of hours of free labor that went into its training data. While Google has muddied the water recently, it still mostly connects eyeballs to human-created sources (where there is attribution). ChatGPT launders billions of hours of human creation and thought into a big sili-con
I can't believe I even have to say this, but please do not grant the San Francisco police department the power to kill people using armed robots: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/11/red-alert-sfpd-want-power-kill-robots
Red Alert: The SFPD Want the Power to Kill with Robots

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors will vote soon on a policy that would allow the San Francisco Police Department to use deadly force by arming its many robots. This is a spectacularly dangerous idea and EFF’s stance is clear: police should not arm robots.TAKE ACTIONEMAIL YOUR SUPERVISOR: don'...

Excellent piece from @nberlat, who has hit the nail on the head about the dangers of this man and others like him to regular working people. Aka LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE. I laugh so as not to cry at the stans who think they’d be hardcore enough to work for Melon. Melon does not give a fuck about you, bro. He fired all the stans at Bird, too. They were shocked — shocked, I tell you — that he didn’t give fuck one about their personal ideology. Workers are widgets.

What is machine learning?

❌ Wrong:

Intelligent computer

✅ Right:

A lazy, maliciously-compliant, narrow-minded genie

Whatever you want the machine to do, specify it correctly, narrow the task, and ensure there's no unintended shortcut available for the ML algorithm.
