I just realised that so much of living life as a young person is living it performatively. Choosing or not choosing one thing or the other just because it’s more interesting, or not what our parents did; because ‘stick it to the man’ or ‘we’ll show them all’. What choices did I make that were 100% my own, and not because I was trying to make a statement and break out of the life that people wanted me to have?
(Not many. In spite of the blessings and opportunities, not many.)
