I've learned a lot of stuff with varying levels of success in my life...and I can, without a doubt, say that learning even just BASIC figure skating is the hardest thing I've ever tried to learn. I've never felt more awkward in my LIFE and falling off a rope has nothing on falling onto cold hard ice. But I shall keep on keeping on and maybe someday be able to show you all me not falling down.
@RobW @vixentael @matthewbischoff @joro @thedevme @dotjay @acbdev @swifteves I donโ€™t feel let down in the least, Rob. Sending you hugs and grateful to be someone on this list. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ
@schwa My biggest frustration with focus modes is that they have to be *maintained* -- every time I download a new app or start having frequent text convos with a new person I have to think: how does X fit into my N focus modes, and then I have to go into each focus mode and make the appropriate updates. It's exhausting, but it's the only way they don't quickly become near useless for me.

@Stevenpotato @schwa oooh I'm intrigued! I didn't know this - also might see if the RSS thing works. Could be a handy tool for sure
@richbruchal @schwa Yes, after maintaining 3 twitter accounts for years I'm 100% committed to the 1 account life over here. If people don't like the occasional circus video, thatโ€™s not something I'm going to worry about.

@schwa I think the thing I'd enjoy is the local timeline being full of content that is more likely to apply to me (than I find in the current instance), plus I'm just generally curious to try a smaller instance to actually see if I notice the difference or not (it's def possible it's actually all the same in the end).

As to identity, def a good point. I know there are def some artist and circus ones out there...but i get enough of that on IG, so I'm here for my nerd side.

Ok since you all did a wonderful job of talking me out of hosting my own Mastodon instance (thank you ๐Ÿ™) my next question is:

Iโ€™d like to be on an instance that feels like community and mastodon.social is lovely but a bit too big for that (for me). Why do you love your instance? What makes it fun?

(As far as community goes, I think iOS, dev, tech, Swift, IDing as female are all areas Iโ€™d feel at home in.)

Out of the blue idea: advice column where folks ask questions about things at the intersection of business and technology, answered by a principal engineer and MBA (me!)

I lack the audience to do so now, but hopefully once I finish my MBA in March Iโ€™ll have energy for side projects ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

@paolamataI I was hired as a stage manager for a hot second while I wasn't in tech and was def chosen based on my "cat herding" and organizational skills (+ knowledge of the circus industry in my case) -- it was amazingly fun but didn't really pay of course.
