Hi Marcus! The bugs have been fixed -- thank you so much! πŸ™‚

If you still have some time available, we would really appreciate if you could try filling out the survey again! 🀩

Pretty sure I'm the only reinforcement learning class with this slide:

@kathleenthelaw Hi Kathleen, sorry that you experienced this!! Thanks for trying to complete our survey despite the difficulties. We really appreciate it πŸ™‚

These are good suggestions --- we will keep these in mind. To clarify, were issues 1) and 2) specific to our study, or with mastodon in general?

Thanks!!!

@funkylab Hi Marcus, really sorry to hear that you experienced this, that's so weird!

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, we will try our best to figure out what's wrong and fix it.

If you're able and willing to provide any additional details, we would really appreciate it!

@alisynthesis Hi Alison, thank you for the kind reminder! We will try to fix this asap πŸ™‚ Really appreciate it!

If you're willing, could you provide the phone/browser that you were using? 🀝

@not2b That's a good idea! This is definitely a direction we could go in -- thank you for the kind suggestion.

Recruiting Survey Participants!

We are running a study on whether Mastodon feeds show us posts that align with our goals of using social media πŸ™‚

Estimated time: 10 mins
Participate for $5 compensation! (currently US only)

We'll try to build a tool to filter Mastodon posts to help us fulfill our goals of using social media. We will experiment with many methods (rule-based, topic models, large language models) to see if they can achieve this πŸ€”

@ryanliu The attraction of Mastodon for me is that it does not have these kinds of features (some opaque algorithm deciding which posts I see, and any use of an LLM will produce an opaque algorithm). But I wouldn't care if there were a robot that uses an algorithm to boost posts, because people would be free to follow the robot or not. That would seem more in keeping with the way things are done here.

@ryanliu hey, this is awesome! Just a heads up that if someone tries to consent to the terms on their phone, they may not be able to because the left arrow overlays the consent radio buttons.

@ryanliu absolutely! Latest Firefox on Android.
@ryanliu I get a "are you blocking cookies?" (No?) trying to login into mastodon.social.
Near impossible to use on a phone in general btw. Tonight the instance three times was painful.
But what I want is 1) option to not see retweets of things I've already seen, and 2) user-level controls (mute, mute for X days) to carry over to retweets.

@ryanliu the form being difficult to fill out (including it being difficult to type out a full instance name character by character) was the study UI not being mobile friendly. The login error appears to be Mastodon social's problem, but seems like your study would ideally enable login via the app the user is already logged into (switching to mobile web is hard on a phone, and necessitates re-logging in).
@ryanliu just puts me in an endless loop of 2 of previous toots after a minute or two – can't finish study.

@ryanliu Hi Ryan, no worries! Cool that you're doing this. There's really not much to tell you here: went through the first few pages of the survey including the agreement, then came to the point where I was greeted with a toot and an arrow button, clicked on that arrow button, got a different toot, did that a few times, and things started to repeat, at some point it was the same two toots alternating. No way to escape that. Hope that helps!

@ryanliu we're working on something similar. I'd love to chat more about this
