In the "Lord's Prayer", the well known phrase "Give us this day our daily bread", has a surprising secret. In the original greek, the word translated as "daily" is a word, "Epiousion", that is unique. It is known no where else in ancient greek. Translating it has no consensus. Literally translated, "epi-" is a prefix meaning 'on top of', and -ousion' means "being". 'on top of being'. Some translate it as "super necessary", "supersubstantial", and even "the <thing> of tomorrow". The 'thing' of the coming age, ie immortality. Is this 'bread' just another form of the ambrosia of greek myth? I feel like there are so many hidden connections between things at times.
To an Engineer, good enough is perfect. To an artist, nothing is ever good enough. (With apologies to Alexander Calder for misquoting)
I was reading a recent reddit thread about generational differences and approach to work. Older generations (like me - I'm X) have a lot of identity tied up on their work and wow that fits me to a T. I defined myself by what I do and did, and find fulfillment and value in it. I /~LIKE~/ my work. I have plenty of other non work related identity, but they don't seem to be valued by anyone else (nor do they have to be) so they just don't show up as much. Ultimately I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong here - just that craft/work as your identity isn't necessarily a bad thing.
(1/2) After 25 years at my employer (crazy for tech...) I was given the chance to choose a gift from the "anniversary" catalog. Most gifts were in the $200 range. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but really... Anyway, I chose a wallet - all the other gifts were pretty weird (a basic microscope? A wine opener?) Anyway, a $225 wallet. "Real Leather" "Handcrafted" "Detroit based" etc. Well, it was made in Vietnam, anyway. My current wallet was disintegrating and I didn't have a (...)
replacement. So I put my cards in it -- it held considerably fewer things than my old wallet, and it didn't seem that great anyway. I put it on my dresser, and saw there, behind the TV - a wallet I had purchased and forgotten about. For $40, it was pretty much indistinguishable from this "$225" one. Sigh. 25 years for this...
Anybody have a recommendation for a laser cutter -- that isn't a $6999 Glowforge, anyway? I'd like to cut up some acylic and balsa wood into pieces as well as maybe do some engraving, but I think $7k is a pretty steep price of entry.
Luke (from WAN show/Linus Tech tips fame) frustrates me. I struggle sometimes to find technology he likes and is passionate about, since he steers away from so many. It feels weird to have a technology show co-host that rejects so much, especially compared to Linus' enthusiasm.
Reviews for hot air popcorn poppers are wild. Half of them bemoan how they aren't built in the USA, but are in China, declaring they'd pay "Over $100 for a USA one!" (no they wouldn't - just look at Walmart's off brand chinese knockoffs) - and another saying that it, quotes, "Works on "Voted Democrat" corn."
I watched Disney's "Strange World" tonight. Yet another film in a long line of films made by GenX/Millenials who fantasize about their parents apologizing to them. :)
I've worked for the same company for a very long time now. I feel valued and well paid and management isn't too bad, but its not normal for an IT person to be at the same company for this long so I feel a sense of FOMO or perhaps that I'm doing something wrong for staying.
