I’d like to thank Matthew Carter for his generous input.
The text on the microsite was written by Florian Hardwig. @fhardwig
I am very grateful for his expertise and commitment.
German version coming soon.
While researching the Airport Alphabet, I stumbled upon a favorite design book of mine: A sign systems manual by Alan Fletcher, Colin Forbes, and Bob Gill.
It's one of the few sources that provides the original shapes of the Airport alphabet. So, I definitely had to get my hands on it.
I was lucky enough to find a copy online at a reasonable price. After a long journey from the UK to Germany, first by train to Antwerp and then by mail, I was thrilled to hold it in my hands.
Airport - A new typeface family.
An interpretation of Matthew Carter’s alphabet for London Airport.
The original was drawn in 1961 for the wayfinding system in the newly built Oceanic Terminal, today known as Heathrow Terminal 3.
The digital reimagination expands Carter’s design to seven weights and optimizes it for contemporary use.
Designed with the input and approval of Matthew Carter.
