there's this text post from tumblr I can't find anymore, i've been thinking about it all day... it's about the overlap between autistic experience and enjoying kink or bdsm. Essentially it was a discussion about how if your every day is a constant balancing act of controlling or avoiding certain sensory stimulation, you might end up with a unique perspective on why people enjoy pain.
for example, when sometimes light or noise is overwhelming but you develop strategies to get through the discomfort anyway because you need to be able to go places. if that's how you go through life, then it's not too difficult to understand that sometimes things that are fun or worth doing are not necessarily also easy, comfortable, or painless.
Through this perspective, pain is just one of many stimuli like taste or texture or pressure where a person can handle a certain amount, and might enjoy experiencing different levels of it for fun, and even more so when it's in a strictly controlled environment with clear rules and agreements about consent
