@remakingeden HOLY SHIT. After dicking around with Cosmos and Cloudflare and Let’sEncrypt and Docker and Omada ALL FUCKING DAY, I got #Tailscale installed on four devices and was browsing my Nextcloud files on my iPhone in TWO HOURS.
YOU, Fine Internet Person, are my new best friend! THANK YOU! That was STUPID EASY. In fact, the hardest part was remembering how to edit the Nextcloud config.php file inside Docker to add the authorized domain.
@tailscale FTW!
@RockyC haha it's great isn't it. I'm glad it worked out! Have fun self hosting, hopefully it's a breeze from here on out.
@tailscale @ironicbadger there's a great testomonial 😁
@RockyC ah okay so your going the reverse proxy route exposed to the internet?
Have you considered cutting out exposing it to the internet and just using tailscale to access it from where you need it?
That's what I do and tbh it gives me piece of mind not exposing something like Immich that is technically still in beta to the internet. I have 0 ports open but can still access everything on my phone and laptop.
What are you trying to self host?
Are you just trying to use the services on a local network or forward them to the internet?
Are you using Docker?
I've been feeling helpless in the face of *waves hands* everything but I finally realized I AM doing something. I've been doing something for 20+ years, in spite of limited time and energy and nearly no budget.
I'm creating habitat.
There was nothing here when I arrived in 2003. I had ambitious permaculture plans, but quickly realized a "proper" project was well beyond my resources. So I've done my best, and I'm working with what thrives here – humble plants like wild daisies and day lilies, and spirea.
Red clover, lupins, and dandelion help improve the soil. I planted apple, plum, and pear trees (the hazlenut aren't doing terribly well, so I hope I can figure them out).
The rock walls I built attract snakes. I have at least one hare (found some droppings in the garden just a few minutes ago). The birds love it here. I have a small vegetable garden, even though I'm not great at growing vegetables. But still.
The garden evolves as I do. This is one section near the compound gate, a.k.a. Outer Space as far as the cat's concerned.
Highlight of today's conversation with AT&T
Me: "we currently have an internet service with you, but I'm calling about a different service."
Them: "ok, do you have it with you now?"
Me: "have what?"
Them: "the internet service."
Me: "I have the account number yes."
Them: "No, not the account number, the internet."
Me: "Do I have the internet with me now?"
Them: "yes."
Me: "I don't understand."
Them, frustrated: "Can you physically touch the internet right now?"
Me: "What?"
