When I visit someone's profile on my Mastodon server for the first time, and I haven't followed them before, I don't see any content at all - I only start seeing content that they post after I (or someone else on my server - but it's just me here!) follow them

I'm sure there's plenty of discussion about this already - where can I get the low-down?

"Fetch their latest content on demand via an API call to their host" presumably has some flaws that I'm not understanding yet
