Clement, church father, considers #greed.

Proverbs 11:26 and Haggai 1:6-8 promise blessing to one that sells, doesn’t create artificial scarcity in a necessity. But are we no longer allowed to make value judgements about any action in the marketplace?

How can you consider how you gathereth wages?

Oswald Chambers, Baptist evangelist, writes on the Sermon on the Mount. Salvation is a “first mile”, and obedience is a second, both done by Christ in us. Chambers sees the difficult requirements of the SotM as a required passivity were Christ completes His work in us. Our right is to not insist on our rights.

Conservatives meanwhile tell oppressed they have no rights, yet every slight against them is persecution.

How can you not hurt the Son of God?

John Calvin, early Calvinist, comments on entertaining strangers (Heb 13:2). He says this wasn’t about the rich throwing parties, but about entertaining of the miserable and needy, many of whom then were Christian refugees fleeing religious persecution.

I remember back when conservatives advocated against helping Syrian Christian refugees, one guy said he’d revoke the “man card” of someone who’d flee. Put up your dukes vs. a missile, lad?

How can you entertain angels?

If Margaret Sanger is the only person you’ve publicly accused of racism, then, yes, you are a racist.

Arthur Penrhyn Stanley was an Anglican Dean. Here he paints a biblically thorough, systematic theology of benevolence in a single sentence. A minimum of nine verses referenced, plus the whole life of Jesus. Can you name them?

I see contemporary Christians write systematic theologies of guidance for youth without mentioning helping people in need.

How can you show mercy?

John Bunyan, Puritan preacher, writes on a life of righteousness. Have you shown more mercy to a dog, an enemy, or a pig, than the poor? Has the person who claims to righteousness ever clothed a naked person? Have they have taken delight in being defrauded?

Would today’s disciples of Bunyan take delight in being defrauded?

Should we consider if we care more about animals than people?

How can you suffer for righteousness sake?

I thought of changing the spelling and punctuation to suit my own tastes and interpreation, but I looked at the original and those are a set of commas. I also hope that the original spelling causes one to slow down and unpack each thought.

Guillame Bucanus, French-Swiss Calvinist, considers relation between faith and chairty.

Faith is an act of receiving, while Charity is an act of giving and bestowing. Faith makes us the sons of God. Charity “tries” us, as to whether we be the sons of God.

In contrast, John Piper is saying that Jesus will ask how much bible reading you’ve done.

How can you demonstrate that you are a son of God?

This seems a much more joyful way of wearing oneself out for the Lord than John Piper’s suggesting of reading the Bible until it tastes like cardboard.

Maltbie Davenport Babcock, a Presbyterian minister in NY, wrote, “This is my Father’s World”. Tiring out our bodies for the Lord would include meeting poor, offering the radiance of our faith, and adjusting inequalities. By doing so our bodies may be broken, perhaps even our blood shed, but at the end we can commit our finished work with joy into the Father’s hands.

Inequalities????

How can you tire out your body for Him?

Thomas Watson, English Puritan, teaches on good works. Some flip out with “jealousy” when works are stressed, acting as if this were mere Catholic doctrine. But should we teach Jesus’ words, or fear men?

I’ve got those bruises, talking in conservative Lutheran circles.

How can you speak the truth as it is in Jesus?
