My cat Nimitz comes over to talk to me. I don't know if she is hungry or just wants attention. So I start by petting her then we have the following conversation while I do that:
"are you hungry?"
(muffled cat noise that might be saying yes but I'm not sure)
"I could get up and feed you, but you're sitting on my foot."
(she instantly moves three inches to the side to not be on my foot.)
"...Okay then, I guess you're hungry" (I feed her)
