so the solution was to just order one from amazon jp. it arrived today, and i got the PC-9801BX booting. even found a monitor laying around that accepts the weird 24 kHz hsync that the PC-98s output

@Tijn Oh those actually look nice! Issue is that it needs to specifically be 100V (Japanese standard) rather than 110/120V - 120V is sort of right on the edge of what these things are designed for and I figure it’s good to have a bit of headroom to allow for variations in line voltage
preferably an isolation transformer as well I guess, as I don’t have a grounded power cable
