Each living thing imposes a little order on the world, we are anchored by our "oldest tree" --and if it is struck down there is another and another and another forever. A scrap of living root in chaos left by clear cutting and fire or a stout behemoth of an ancient tree that announced its age as it rises from the rocks and moss. Living systems are more resilient than the violence that tears at our fringes.
