#DeltaChat breaks the one app, one ID rule of phone-number-based apps by supporting multiple chat profiles. This allows for true private messaging where you can keep a public identity for the Web or Fediverse separate from a private one for family and friends. Managing multiple selves is a new experience for many, but it is key to digital autonomy. We are working to make multi-profile handling even smoother in upcoming releases to ensure switching contexts is seamless. (3/3)
The total privacy of #DeltaChat has a trade-off: there is no global directory. Connecting for private messaging requires a direct QR scan or using an existing channel to exchange invite links. The hurdle is often the readiness of friends, family, or those around you to switch. However, once connected, the app is an enjoyable daily driver. It is about moving to a space where you cannot be found by strangers, but can still enjoy modern, reliable chat with those who matter. ... (2/3)
While platforms like #Matrix or #Signal manage user identities on a server, #DeltaChat and #Chatmail are not platforms in the classic sense. They operate without a central registry, meaning there is no central gatekeeper to grant or deny access. This setup for private messaging naturally complicates invasive age verification. Without a public registry or user discovery, there is no technical hook to verify users. #Chatmail also enforces E2EE by rejecting all unencrypted data. ... (1/3)

Don't believe those who loudly claim email can not avoid metadata! They are ignorant of our continuous works on minimizing metadata:

DONE:

- no phone number other identifying data needed
- no cleartext "Subject"
- no cleartext "To"
- randomized "Date"
- no IP addresses
- group/avatar/attachment/etc metadata only contained in encrypted message parts

Upcoming:

- servers to never see cryptographic ID metadata
- remove "threading" and auxilliary headers
- experiment with Sealed Sender

@Alice Wait—what? Does the internet have a pause button?

On the occasion of SimpleX and Session getting cryptocoin-donations/funding ... we won't hide that most delta contributors are pretty skeptical of cryptocoin-circles. Exhibit 1: #Webxdc apps - mini apps that anyone can whip up -- and the declared motto still on the https://webxdc.org web page since inception mid 2022:

No logins, no coins, no platforms ...

and this year, January 23rd, we added "no billionaires" to the growing list of things deserving a "no" :)

#Telegram has a nice and fast UI, granted.

But the 1 billion people using TG are at risk because of its big central database that any state security service craves for. Moreover, several anonymization proxy-bot offerings were hacked in 2024, identifying millions of users and content.

#deltachat builds anonymization directly into the app and has pervasive end-to-end encryption. #chatmail relay operators can sleep well, knowing they have nothing. Ergo, E2EE is good for any operators sleep! :)

Since @element stopped working, I migrated to @delta it's fantastic!
