one small benefit of living in this age of AI-written slop is that i no longer spend nearly as much time proofreading what i write to catch every single last typo since i'm no longer self-conscious about having some typos in what i submit ... somehow it makes my work appear more human and maybe more trustworthy

Onion article?

“I want to talk to people,” said Sellers, who runs a content agency for entrepreneurs out of Birmingham, Alabama. “I don’t want to talk to a bunch of [AI] note takers,” he said — before adding that he has occasionally himself sent an AI note taker to meetings in his place.

i can tweak/edit design files in figma decently well if someone else does the hard work of creating an initial draft, but i can't create much of anything on my own since i have no visual design training ... seems to mirror how a lot of people can tweak/edit code well once the basic infrastructure/boilerplate has been built (either by a human or AI tool), but it's a much higher load to be able to build from scratch

we've already sold 1000 copies of The Secret Rules of the Terminal since it came out on Tuesday!

so to celebrate I'm giving away 1000 copies to anyone who can't afford to buy one. You can use code BUYONEGIVEONE at checkout to get a free PDF copy if $12 USD is a lot for you.

The Secret Rules of the Terminal

wizard zines

If you want to get "The Secret Rules of the Terminal" (or any other zine!) and you're in a country with a weaker currency than the US (India, Brazil, etc), there's a discount to make the zines more affordable. You can see it in action here:

https://wizardzines.com/zines/terminal/

If you're in a country this applies to, you should see something like this:

this blog post is largely about how writing about the terminal was a slow descent from

this can't be that complicated right?
into
oh no
oh NO
OH NO
OH NOOOO

anyway the point of "The Secret Rules of the Terminal" is to explain the Cool Useful Parts of how the terminal works where understanding them is pretty straightforward and can help you do useful stuff and carefully avoid the many Cursed Parts

delighted to announce that my new zine "The Secret Rules of the Terminal" is out today!!

You can get it for $12 USD here: https://wizardzines.com/zines/terminal

The reason this zine is called "The Secret Rules of the Terminal" is that I learned more useful things while writing this zine than when writing any other zine, even though I've been using the terminal every day for 20 years.

It really left me feeling like the terminal is full of hidden secrets -- because "the terminal" is made up of so many different pieces, there's no single terminal manual you can read!

Here's the table of contents (which as a bonus shows the components of the terminal!)

This is an appreciation thread for EuterPen, a multimodal music notation system by @Vincent_Cavez et al. It aims to support the non-linear process of exploration during composition.

It's the most sensitive and imaginative academic HCI design work I've seen in quite some time!

the irony is that the youtube algorithm keeps recommending his video clips to me when he's all about getting off of screens :)

@b0rk And wow, I entered my EU address and apparently the 15-pack of print+pdf has free shipping to here! (And great value I'm sure but still quite a sum, so have not clicked Submit yet.)
@ednl i've been thinking of making some more smaller zine packs, every time I write something new the "all the zines" pack gets more and more expensive and I feel like it's a lot at this point
@b0rk I can imagine a 10-pack being popular especially if one could pick any 10. But that would probably be an administrative nightmare for you and/or the collating/shipping company.
@ednl that’s a cool idea, it might be doable

@b0rk Countries with a weaker president get a 100% discount!

(Yeah, that was a bad joke, sorry! Great zines, great initiative!)

@b0rk this is a lovely discount rule. you rock
@b0rk That's amazing!
@b0rk apparently Poland counts too, many thanks for that

@b0rk Yes -

Thanks for that - a lot.

It is exactly the difference between something one purchases without thinking twice, and a full book price here in Brazil.

@b0rk that rules so hard!!
@b0rk And bought! Thanks. (I paid full price as I’m in the currently chaotic turmoil of the United States.)
@b0rk Ehm this sounds like a "less than optimal" way of doing global pricing. Why not just set the price in that currency lower to begin with?
@agowa338 huh that’s an interesting idea, when i originally set this up I had no way to set different prices in different currencies. I’m not sure if I can even do it now but maybe!

@b0rk this is an awesome thing you do... As someone who has taken advantage of this offer (am in India) I can attest that this makes a big difference in the cost & affordability.

So thank you for making this extra effort.

@b0rk
Ohhh, it's so kind of you! Thank you for doing this. Your zines are so great, you rock.
@b0rk , thank you! I really enjoyed the zine, and learned a lot!
@b0rk Thank you so much for doing this!
@b0rk thank you 🥹
btw, your job is awesome. thanks for that.
@b0rk Good for you on the V pricing!!
