Today, a four-day pause in Israel's atrocities will begin, but people's movements and human rights organizations have been calling for a permanent ceasefire.

#PeoplesHistory | Today, we remember Samora Moisés Machel, Mozambican revolutionary and freedom fighter. Machel led FRELIMO (Frente de Libertação de Moçambique) which fought for independence from Portugal and he served as the first President of Mozambique since independence in 1975.
On October 19, 1986, Machel died in a plane crash in dubious circumstances, near the Mozambican-South African border. A total of 34 people, including Machel, were killed in the crash and nine survived.

On September 7, 1996, Tupac was injured in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. He succumbed to his injuries six days later at age 25.
#PeopleHistory | Today, we remember Steve Biko, the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary who fought to build political consciousness among Black South Africans.
Biko was the founder of the Black Consciousness Movement and emphasized the importance of Black South Africans achieving psychological liberation and self-reliance in order to bring about fundamental change in the country. His contributions were a key part of the movement that would eventually end the Apartheid regime in his country.
Biko suffered constant political persecution and was tortured to death by the Apartheid security forces after violating the travel ban against him. He died from brain injuries after being beaten by several members of the police during an "interrogation."

On September 4, 1957, the governor of Arkansas ordered the deployment of the Arkansas National Guard to "preserve the peace" and prevent Black students from entering the school. The governor claimed that there was an "imminent danger of tumult, riot, and breach of peace" due to the integration. A mob of white segregationists was also present and prevented the Black students' entry.
On September 23, 1957, President Eisenhower issued Executive Order 10730 to federalize the Arkansas National Guard and deploy them to support the integration as they protected African American students.
