Something @nasser and I were talking about last night: one way of thinking about freedom is that it takes more work. Redistributing power means redistributing risk and responsibility. When people are no longer beholden to the whims of a corporate platform, they're more beholden to one another. We're seeing people used to just being mad at Twitter for making bad moderation calls face--and make--moderation calls and face the fallout and face being beholden to others.
Just finished my third time through Elden Ring. I can quit anytime I want.
Almost 180k new users joined #mastodon yesterday, a new record. This third #twitterMigration wave happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum to #Twitter workers. Each wave is stronger than the previous one. Here is my updated plot showing the three consecutive waves.
@mathowie oh dang, hope you’re back in the Cs and Ks soon. (Shedding a tear for VSCO, haven’t logged in for years.)
@nelson @mathowie Same, really enjoyed that show and was glad to see he was still playing. https://www.flickr.com/photos/pb/15199232836/

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.

Sharing one of my favorite poems since childhood.

By the 12thc warrior poet Xin Qiji 辛棄疾, who was sidelined during peacetime, demoted, drifting through a decade of minor posts in remote lands.

Poetry, then, is that which is left unsaid.
“My, what a cool and lovely autumn.”

- I read it aloud and write a bit more about the poet, and the translation choices that I made, here: https://quotomania.simplecast.com/episodes/quotomania-308-xin-qiji

Anyone have a recommendation for a web-based podcast app that will alert you to new episodes, remember episodes you've listened to, and know your current position in episodes you're playing? I use the web version of Overcast for that currently, but those features are going away unfortunately. I get that it makes sense to focus on the phone apps exclusively, but the web is accessible from almost any device and ends up being more portable than an app.
Place your bets, lol
I know there's an influx of new people here right now, and I know that can be scary for the existing community. But you'll be a more effective spreader of good social norms if you welcome people and help them get accustomed to the new place with kindness and generosity, rather then scolding and making people feel unwelcome.
