@Adventurer I think I've heard of mosquito bits! Just did a little reading on them, and they seem to help according to the good people of the internet. I'll probably combine those with a top layer of (horticultural?) sand and see how it goes.

buy art if you’re able. it is essential. art is one of those things worth having and supporting as an incredible human endeavor. and paying an artist directly is a completely different act than purchasing a product. buying art from a living artist is like inviting them to your dinner table and feeding them in exchange for a small token of beauty

Side note: any other plant parents have tips on dealing with fungus gnats? My snake plant seemed to be in remission for a long time, but I think the gnats just stopped breeding when they were out of season.

I think I may go pick up some sand to put on top of the soil and see if that helps but I am getting pretty close to my wits end and throwing out the problematic plant is not off the table :(
