Delighted to be back in beautiful Bologna for Le nozze di Figaro at the Teatro Comunale’s temporary theatre. With Giangregorio, Bellocci, Priante, Sicilia, Molinari & more. Dendievel conducts Talevi’s staging
It was loud
I’m delighted to be back at the legendary Teatro alla Scala for Mahler 8 with Merbeth, Pastirchak, Mühlemann, Lehmkuhl, von der Damerau, Vogt, Volle, Anger. Chailly conducts the Scala orchestra, chorus & children’s chorus with the chorus of Teatro La Fenice
With appropriately Caledonian weather, it’s nice to be back at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto for the first time in many years for Macbeth with Kelsey, Penda, Köse, Cairns & more. Scappucci conducts McVicar’s staging. And yes I am voluntarily subjecting myself to a McVicar staging
Dein Tag wird kommen. Delighted to be back again at the Kongelige Teater for Elektra with Lindstrom, Urmana, Strid, Reuter, Henning-Jensen & more. Søndergård conducts Tcherniakov’s staging.
Manic Street Preachers on the tv. A reminder of the time when the UK was a good place to live. Those days are gone sadly.
Mahler 2 reminds us that we may go through so much shit, but we still have some of our best days ahead of us.
A night to remember for a very long time to come
Antonio Pirolli made the first movement a terrifying ride to the abyss, gave us stillness in the second, and made the third remind us of what was. María José Montiel’s German was awful and she was rather breathless. But the fifth movement was a thrilling counterpart to all that came before – the melodies soared, the chorus gave us stillness, and that closing ‘Aufersteh’n’ was massive, leaving me in floods of tears, simply because it reminded us all that there is so much worth living for.
Curtain call after tonight’s Mahler 2 at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos. It was absolutely phenomenal. What a pleasure to hear an opera orchestra under an Italian conductor play this music. They made it all so cantabile yet never understated the drama, the interplay between the sections and melodies brought to life so vividly.
