Curtain call after tonight’s Mahler 2 at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos. It was absolutely phenomenal. What a pleasure to hear an opera orchestra under an Italian conductor play this music. They made it all so cantabile yet never understated the drama, the interplay between the sections and melodies brought to life so vividly.
Antonio Pirolli made the first movement a terrifying ride to the abyss, gave us stillness in the second, and made the third remind us of what was. María José Montiel’s German was awful and she was rather breathless. But the fifth movement was a thrilling counterpart to all that came before – the melodies soared, the chorus gave us stillness, and that closing ‘Aufersteh’n’ was massive, leaving me in floods of tears, simply because it reminded us all that there is so much worth living for.
Mahler 2 reminds us that we may go through so much shit, but we still have some of our best days ahead of us.
A night to remember for a very long time to come
