Yet another person ported over from the bird app. Shall we see how this goes?

@gwensnyder yeah, I'm planning on staying back at the gym, but I might wait until February for the herd to thin out a bit.
Tonight I get to play some D&D, tomorrow night I get to have my first NYE party since COVID with friends. It's going to be an okay weekend!
@epidiah today I'm trying to make it through the last few days of teaching before our week off. Friday seems super far away.

As someone who went through a college music program I want to say that the whole system was and, according to more recently graduated colleagues, is toxic.

The abuses at Julliard are extreme, but the fact is these institutions (especially performance studios) regularly disregard student wellness and actively encourage unhealthy practices.

I welcome this light and hope more of the mold is exposed.

Mastodon
@gwensnyder I'm curious if Federated protocols can somewhat manage both. Servers with cultures, tools, and rules that address the needs of that community that still interact with other federated spaces. I see this as a potential positive, which happened somewhat on Twitter by currating block lists, but seems more baked into the design of Mastodon?

@ianburnette @ZachWeinersmith Vsauce had a great piece on the limits of logic. We use "logic" to justify an intuited position and to convince others of that position. We construct our logical arguments to attempt to sway our intended audience or to match our self identified beliefs.

We create compassionate arguments because we want to be seen as compassionate even when our actions are the opposite.

@ZachWeinersmith at the risk of sounding like the people who talk about "content slaves of the South"; most immigrant workers are thankful to have positions in agriculture, food service, hospitality, etc. Doesn't mean they don't deserve better working conditions etc. but the fact that immigrants are exploited are arguments against exploitation, not immigration.

I know I'm preaching to the choir.

Guns are now the most common cause of childhood death amounting to nearly 1 in 5 of all childhood deaths in the US. More than disease, more than motor vehicle accidents, more than anything.

This is not a problem a first world nation should have.

Childhood’s Greatest Danger: The Data on Kids and Gun Violence

Gun violence recently surpassed car accidents as the leading cause of death for American children. No group of kids has been spared, but some have fared far worse.
