How did solar power become so cheap? By the 2020s, China was dominating the global solar market. How did they manage that? Solar needs cheap coal because making silicon requires volcano-like heat. In the 2020s, China was building about two new coal plants a week—six times more than the rest of the world combined. Solar needs cheap charcoal. Every year, China extracts 14,000 football fields’ worth of tropical forest wood from Myanmar to help smelt its silicon.

I can't believe we're still having to say this in 2025, but would people *please* scroll back to the top of a website when they're finished reading, so it's ready for the next person. We've even got buttons at the bottom to do it all in one go, it's not 1994 any more.

Each week, she and her team head out to raid these unlicenced e-waste plants, which have popped up in recent years, mostly in rural areas.

The problem keeps growing.

Much of the e-waste comes from the US and the European Union

Even though most Western countries have laws in place to prevent the dumping of e-waste in other countries, there are ways round them. Some waste, for example, is deliberately mislabelled as "second-hand electronic goods for re-sale"

The Asian nation is importing thousands of tonnes of electronic waste per year, despite a ban.

Bitcoin is often portrayed by promoters as existing in a separate cyber universe, distinct from the biological world. This view is far from reality, say critics, who point to bitcoin’s serious and escalating environmental impacts, with its global spread also raising environmental justice concerns.

Bitcoin mining demands huge amounts of computing power and is an energy hog. It monopolizes entire data centers that are currently multiplying globally.

Bitcoin boom comes with huge intensifying environmental footprint

While much has been written about bitcoin, many people still find it a hard topic to comprehend, even as promoters like U.S. President Donald Trump rave about it being a revolutionary digital currency that will rapidly replace hard currency. However, unlike money, there’s currently no bank or government to back up, insure and regulate bitcoin, […]

As any GenX, I like listening to my old 90's CD's; and yes, including Roger Waters' Perfect sense part 1 and 2 from the album "Amused to Death"

We might not learn nor change course nor remember whether we canceled Mr Waters or why, but at least, can we enjoy the original art, the beautiful lyrics? And... That voice.

A single cell phone? Last time I checked up, it was about 60 - 90 kg of mining waste for that 140 grams of specialness. And about 14,000 liters of water. Not to worry, we've only made and dumped about 16 billion of them since 2007.
